Tennessee Vols senior quarterback Joey Aguilar reportedly underwent surgery on Friday.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Aguilar “had successful surgery [on Friday] to remove a benign tumor that has been pushing on his biceps tendon and labrum, causing weakness and pain”.

Rapoport reported that Aguilar kept the situation “quiet” during the season.

Aguilar passed for 121 yards and rushed for a touchdown in Tennessee’s loss to Illinois in the Music City Bowl earlier this week.

Aguilar, who transferred from UCLA to Tennessee after spring practice, passed for 3,565 yards and 24 touchdowns during his lone season with the Vols. He also rushed for four touchdowns.

There was speculation that Aguilar could return to Tennessee in 2026 as he’s part of Diego Pavia’s complaint against the NCAA’s junior college eligibility rules.

It’s unlikely, however, that Aguilar will be back at Tennessee in 2026. As a result, the Vols are expected to pursue a quarterback in the transfer portal.
