The Tennessee Vols will almost certainly add a transfer quarterback to their roster this offseason, but no one is quite sure if UT plans to pursue one of the top options in the portal.

Tennessee has several needs to address via the transfer portal, so the program may not be willing to get into a bidding war for a transfer quarterback

Vols insider shares insight on how much Tennessee may be willing to spend on a transfer quarterback

VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Tuesday for his weekly appearance, and he suggested that Tennessee could be willing to spend in the $3 to $4 million range for a transfer quarterback.

“There’s a lot (of competition) for all of those high end quarterbacks,” said Price. “And a lot of them are the same teams — the Miamis, the Oregons, the LSUs. Oregon’s doing a lot of due diligence (on quarterbacks) while not knowing exactly what Dante Moore’s going to do. But a lot of people out there think he’s going to turn pro.

“So yeah, Tennessee would like to be in the mix for those players. A lot of it depends on price point. What kind of functional deal can they get that doesn’t totally mutilate their portal money? I think they’re prepared to go in that $3 to $4 million range. After that, I’m not sure how much higher they go than that — unless they feel like that player is a guaranteed can’t miss kind of player. And so I’m really interested to see where the market is on all of these quarterbacks.”

I don’t think this is a situation where Tennessee has a strict transfer quarterback budget. As Price noted, how much Tennessee spends on a quarterback will depend on the specific player. If it’s a quarterback the Vols really like, for example, maybe they’re willing to spend an extra $500,000 to get a deal done. There are too many variables that could have an impact on Tennessee’s transfer quarterback search to accurately predict how much they’ll spend.

Price’s comments, though, certainly seem to indicate that Tennessee is willing to at least swim in the high-end transfer quarterback waters. We’ll see in the next couple of weeks if the Vols actually leave those waters with a high-end quarterback.
