Tennessee Vols head coach Kim Caldwell went viral on Tuesday night following a loss to the Ole Miss Rebels thanks to a very quick handshake.

After the Lady Vols’ 94-81 loss to the Ole Miss Rebels, Caldwell quickly made her way through the handshake line, barely acknowledging Ole Miss head coach Yolett McPhee-McCuin.

Yolett McPhee-McCuin reacts to drive-by handshake from Kim Caldwell

McPhee-McCuin was asked after the game about her post-game handshake with Caldwell.

The Bahamian native showed some grace for Caldwell in the moment while pointing out that she doesn’t take “stuff like that” personally.

“I think she was probably just really ready to go,” said McPhee-McCuin. “I like Kim. And sometimes — I don’t ever take stuff like that personally because the emotions, we’re competitive, and she’s at Tennessee, that’s a lot of history behind that place. Maybe she was in a rush or maybe she was upset, but I respect both of [those scenarios]. For me, I was just glad we got the win.”

I think all of us — fans and media alike — forget that emotions run extremely high immediately after games. That’s not how Caldwell saw that game going, and she was understandably frustrated in the moment (it’s been an up-and-down season for Caldwell and the Lady Vols). Sure, it’s best to probably spend a little more time in the handshake line with the opposing coach, but those things happen. These coaches are human. Post-game reactions aren’t always going to be “perfect”.

McPhee-McCuin understands that as a competitor and as a coach. And that’s why she didn’t take the quick post-game handshake from Caldwell personally.
