Long before Josh Heupel was the head coach of the Tennessee Vols, he was the offensive coordinator for the Oklahoma Sooners, his alma mater.

During his time as an assistant at Oklahoma, Heupel spent four seasons coaching quarterback Sam Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner.

Bradford was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. The former Oklahoma quarterback hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018, but that didn’t stop him from going viral on Thursday night during a wild game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Seattle Seahawks.

In the fourth quarter, Amazon Prime announcer Kirk Herbstreit, perhaps exhausted as he nears the end of what’s been a grueling announcing schedule this season (between college football and NFL duties), accidentally referred to Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold as Sam Bradford.

“All we’ve heard about is Sam Bradford can’t win a big game,” said Herbstreit before correcting himself.

Slip-ups happen — especially on live television — but it was still a funny moment involving the former Heisman Trophy winner.

Sam Bradford once said Josh Heupel taught him how to play quarterback

Bradford, the NFL offensive rookie of the year in 2010, once credited Heupel with teaching him how to play the quarterback position.

“Coach Heupel taught me how to play quarterback,” said Bradford in 2023 (via The Oklahoman). “And he taught me how to work. It would be an understatement to say I was raw when I walked onto campus.”

“I was a pretty good athlete, but Coach Heupel saw something in me,” added Bradford. “He helped me every step of the way during my time in Norman. I am grateful for what he saw in me.”

Bradford spent nine seasons in the NFL, eventually retiring after injuries took their toll on the former Oklahoma standout.
