A former Tennessee Vols star player was praised this week by ESPN's Pat McAfee as the best player at his position in the NFL.
McAfee handed out his "Trenchy Awards" this week and he named Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Trey Smith as the best guard in the NFL in 2024.
Smith, who played at Tennessee from 2017 to 2020, is slated to be a free agent this upcoming offseason after spending the first four seasons of his NFL career with the Chiefs.
Smith was a sixth round selection by the Chiefs in the 2021 NFL Draft. The former Vol fell in the draft due to some health issues that he dealt with as a sophomore at Tennessee in 2018 (blood clots in his lungs). Smith has been healthy since the 2018 season, playing in every game at UT in 2019 and 2020. He's also started 77 games (including the playoffs) for the Chiefs over the last four years.
As a result of being drafted in the sixth round, Smith has been criminally underpaid over the first four years of his NFL career.
The good news for Smith, however, is that he's expected to become the NFL's highest paid guard when he becomes a free agent this offseason. That likely means his time in Kansas City will be over, but at least he'll finally get the payday that he deserves.
