If you're a college football fan who is convinced that Paul Finebaum has an SEC bias, his latest comments about Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart will only solidify your opinion.
Finebaum joined the Until Saturday podcast this week and he discussed comments that Smart made during the weekend of Georgia's game against the Tennessee Vols in 2024, which seemed to confirm that some of Finebaum's views on the College Football Playoff rankings were influenced by Smart.
"When you sit there in Athens the night before the Tennessee game and Kirby Smart takes you aside after the interview that you did with him and just goes ballistic over where he's ranked, I mean, you tend to be influenced by that," said Finebaum.
Georgia was ranked No. 12 in the College Football Playoff rankings before the Bulldogs' game against Tennessee (UGA moved up to No. 10 after beating the Vols).
Finebaum threw plenty of shade at some of the non-SEC teams that were included in the playoff this year, which is what led to the SEC bias narrative.
Smart did a good job of using the media to plead Georgia's case over the last two months of the season. Finebaum essentially listened to Smart's complaints and then went heavy on the SEC is king narrative.
Unfortunately for Smart and Finebaum (and rest of the SEC), narratives don't win games. That's why Georgia, Texas, and Tennessee will be sitting at home on January 20 while Notre Dame and Ohio State are playing for the national championship.
