Former Tennessee Vols quarterback Peyton Manning, a legend in Knoxville, appeared on The Nation on Sunday evening with ESPN's Chris Low and VolQuest's Austin Price.
During the 18 minute interview, Manning was asked about his thoughts on Josh Heupel's exciting up-tempo offense, which has often been criticized as "gimmicky".
Manning, who ran an intricate offense in the NFL with plenty of checks at the line scrimmage, had nothing but positive things to say about the offense that Heupel runs at Tennessee.
"Well, it (Heupel's offense) just works," said Manning. "It's effective and I think good coaches run the offense and recruit players that can execute that offense. And that's the system — that's how it works. And you build off of that. So Josh has been doing this for a long time. He knows all the ins and outs and knows the kind of receivers that he wants, knows the kind of linemen and running backs that he wants. And that's how you build a system. That's how you build a program."
"It's fun to watch, I know that," added Manning. "It's fast paced. It's hard to take a sip of your drink or a bite of your hot dog in between plays because they're already running another one. It's high energy. It's got to be fun to play in as a quarterback, I've talked to Hendon (Hooker) and I've talked to Joe (Milton). They feel like they have a lot of answers, they feel like they're not stuck with just one guy to throw to — which is always tough for a quarterback when you're stuck with one guy. There's lots of options there and flexibility and it just seems like a fun system to play in for sure."
So there you have it. Peyton Manning, one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL, is a fan of Tennessee's offense.
I'm not sure there could be a bigger (or more coveted) endorsement for Josh Heupel.
