Peyton Manning shared some advice before the start of the 2025 season with Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar that he probably should’ve shared with his nephew, Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning, too.
Arch had a tough game on Saturday in the Longhorns’ 29-21 loss to the Florida Gators in Gainesville.
The former five-star recruit threw two interceptions and was sacked six times in the loss.
Despite the rough afternoon, Texas had a chance to tie the game late in the fourth quarter. Arch, however, took a costly sack on second-and-10, and time expired before he could spike the ball for a final Hail Mary attempt.
Peyton Manning’s preseason advice to Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar could have helped Texas QB Arch Manning against Florida
Arch should’ve thrown the ball away on second-and-10 at the end of the fourth quarter. He had plenty of time to throw it away, which would’ve left Texas with more than enough clock to get off a Hail Mary attempt.
Peyton shared that exact advice — throwing the ball away instead of trying to do too much — with Aguilar before Tennessee’s season-opener against Syracuse.
“My advice to Joey was don’t try to do too much,” said Manning on The Mike Keith Show. “Don’t feel like you have to go and make some incredible throw in that first game against Syracuse…Go be Joey. Take the check down, run, throw it away. Nobody’s going to criticize you for throwing it away on third down if nobody’s open. I think that’s easier said than done sometimes.”
Arch certainly could’ve used that advice in the final moments against Florida. It may not have changed the outcome, but at least Texas would’ve had one last shot at tying the game.
