The Tennessee Vols nearly knocked off the Georgia Bulldogs this past Saturday in Neyland Stadium.

Tennessee’s offense put up 41 points against Georgia — by far the most points the Vols have scored against the Bulldogs during the Josh Heupel era — but that wasn’t quite enough to take down UGA.

The 44-41 overtime loss to the Bulldog is tough for Vols fans to swallow, but Tennessee did a lot of good things against Georgia — starting with the offensive play calling.

Josh Heupel held his own in the chess match against Kirby Smart

In order to beat Georgia, teams don’t just have to execute on the field — they also have to win the play-calling chess match against Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart and his staff.

For the most part, Heupel more than held his own against Georgia’s defensive play-callers.

Bulldogs linebacker Raylen Wilson, in fact, noted after the game that Tennessee kept checking into better play calls after seeing how Georgia was lined up.

“It was really just focusing on our kills,” said Wilson when asked about Georgia’s defensive adjustments. “Because they were checking their plays — because I guess they knew what we were in most of the time.”

“It’s frustrating,” added Wilson when asked about Tennessee knowing what Georgia was running. “But at the end of the day it’s football. So we still gotta out there and execute. We gotta execute our call better than they execute theirs.”

That comment from Wilson shows that Heupel had the offense well-prepared for Georgia’s defensive approach. And it also shows that Heupel and the UT offensive staff had the answers, for the most part, for what Georgia was doing defensively.

The Vols came up short, thanks to a missed field goal at the end of regulation, but the big takeaway from this game is that Tennessee is right there with Georgia.
