The Tennessee Vols can make a huge statement on Saturday by ending their eight game losing streak against the Georgia Bulldogs.

This is probably the Vols’ best chance to beat the Bulldogs since Josh Heupel’s arrival in early 2021.

Tennessee’s offense has looked good early this season, while Georgia’s offense has struggled to create explosive plays.

The Bulldogs, however, are still a very talented and well-coached team. Even if the Vols play well on Saturday, this will be a battle.

Quote from Vols redshirt senior defensive back Andre Turrentine shows there’s a decision Josh Heupel must make against Georgia to improve Tennessee’s chances of winning

If Tennessee is going to beat Georgia, they’ll need to play their best game in all three phases.

Specifically, though, the Vols will need to create explosive plays.

One way Tennessee can catch Georgia off guard would be to use sophomore defensive back Boo Carter on offense.

The plan going into the offseason was for Carter to be featured on offense some in 2025. Those plans, however, were put on the backburner due to Carter’s mishaps over the summer.

“We’re going to take it slow here in the beginning, and we’ll figure out where we’re at as we get deeper into camp,” said Heupel in late July when asked about Carter’s role in the offense.

Carter is electric with the ball in his hands — as evidenced by the job he did returning punts last Saturday against East Tennessee State.

Vols redshirt senior defensive back Andre Turrentine called Carter “special” on Monday when asked about the dynamic Chattanooga native.

“Boo Carter is a special player,” said Turrentine. “He’s been that way since high school — and even before that. He’s someone else that I’ve known a long time. When Boo has the ball in his hands, he’s going to be special. He’s going to be him. He just needs people to block for him and open up lanes, and he’s going to make people miss.”

I don’t think there’s any way that Tennessee can give Carter a prominent every down role in the offense against Georgia.

But there should be a couple of plays on the call sheet for Carter — he’s too electric not to use on offense.

It doesn’t have to be anything crazy, either. A perimeter screen, an end-around, a jet sweep, or even just a basic choice route where he’s one-on-one with a defensive back. Carter just needs the ball in space and he can make special things happen.

And the best part is that Georgia has never seen Carter on offense on film. It would be a completely new look that the Bulldogs haven’t prepared for. Even if Carter is used as a decoy in some situations, he could still have value on offense.

Carter is a huge weapon for the Vols. It would be silly to not find a way to put the ball in his hands on offense against one of the best defensive teams in the SEC.

Legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban said it best — think players, not plays. The Vols need to get the ball to their best players on Saturday against Georgia. And Carter is certainly one of Tennessee’s best players.
