Rick Barnes dropped a hilarious all-time quote on Saturday night after the Tennessee Vols’ 77-69 win over the Auburn Tigers.
And then he immediately apologized for it.
Barnes met with reporters after the Vols’ win, and while answering a question about Tennessee’s frontcourt, he jokingly said that he sometimes wonders if his players are betting on games because of some of the passes they make.
“At the end of the game, some of the passes that we throw, I don’t know what to say other than sometimes I wonder if my guys are betting on games,” said Barnes. “I shouldn’t say that. Erase that. I just wonder what’s happening. I mean, because I know that we’re too good of players to do that. Was that bad? I apologize. I shouldn’t have said that. But the fact is, we’ve got to get smarter. We do. We’ve got to get smarter. We have to. And they know it.”
Rick Barnes might have been too candid after the win over Auburn
Barnes is as genuine and candid as any college coach in any sport when talking with reporters. He’s himself, and that’s something everyone should appreciate.
And there’s certainly no one that thinks Tennessee’s players are altering their performances because of gambling. There may be plays that don’t go as planned at times for the Vols — which is always going to be the case in sports — but Barnes’ teams consistently play hard on both ends of the court. Nearly every team that competes against Tennessee points out how difficult they are to play against.
Auburn head coach Steven Pearl, for example, told reporters on Saturday night that his team was “out-physicaled” by Tennessee.
“They beat us at our own game,” said Pearl. “They pushed us around, punked us. They got to the foul line 11 more times than we did, did a really good job with attacking the paint….They just out-physicaled us and kind of had their way. They did a lot of the things that disrupted us. Credit to them.”
Hopefully everyone can just laugh at Barnes’ comments and not turn an obvious joke into something more than it needs to be.
