Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day gave the Tennessee Vols a compliment on Tuesday morning while discussing his team's win in the College Football Playoff championship game.
The Buckeyes capped off an incredible post-season run by beating Notre Dame 34-23 on Monday night to claim Ohio State's ninth national championship.
Day told reporters on Tuesday morning that it can be argued that Ohio State's championship run in 2024 was the greatest run in the history of college football because of the four teams (Tennessee, Oregon, Texas, Notre Dame) the Buckeyes had to beat in the first ever 12-team playoff.
"Nothing great was ever achieved without going through adversity along the way," said Day. "That's what makes this special. Not only that, I think it can be argued that this was the best run in the history of college football. To go play at home against Tennessee, who was a very, very good team. Then go to Oregon, the number one team in the country, and win that game at the Rose Bowl the way we did. And then beat Texas in Texas, which that was a road game — I don't care what anybody says, that was a road game, it was a very difficult game. And then play a really good Notre Dame team like this. You know, I think in the history of college football, I don't think there's been top five wins like that."
The Vols' season didn't end the way Josh Heupel and his players were hoping it would, but it's undeniable that Tennessee was one of the best teams in college football in 2024.
Tennessee just happened to have the misfortune of being matched up with the best team in the sport in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
The Vols, as Ryan Day said, were very, very good in 2024. There's plenty of reason for Tennessee fans to be excited about the future of the program.
