Colorado Buffaloes transfer quarterback Ryan Staub is in the mix to win the Tennessee Vols’ starting quarterback job.

Staub, however, is a massive underdog in this quarterback competition, which also includes redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and true freshman Faizon Brandon.

The California native has the most experience of the three quarterbacks, but he also has the lowest ceiling.

Still, Staub, who transferred from Colorado to Tennessee in January, is an important part of Tennessee’s quarterback room. His experience (two starts in 12 games at Colorado), combined with the good vibes that he brings, will undoubtedly have a positive impact on Tennessee’s quarterback room.

“First off, great guy,” said MacIntyre this week when asked about Staub. “He brings a positive energy to the room. He’s older — he’s kind of been around different systems and he knows a lot of football. So, super grateful to have Ryan.”

Staub met with reporters on Tuesday for the first time since transferring to Tennessee, and he quickly left a positive impression with his grateful demeanor.

“What I get to do for a living right now is just so amazing,” said Staub. “I’m grateful. I mean, I wake up every day and I look at the city, and I walk into this building, and I’m just like, ‘Wow, this is the coolest thing ever.’ So how could you not be grateful for this opportunity? It’s the coolest thing.”

“Honestly, the city is really cool,” added Staub when asked what he’s enjoyed since arriving in Knoxville. “I’ve never been to the south. I’m from Los Angeles — never been to Tennessee before I got here. So I’m just loving every part of it. The city’s really cool. Everything’s been really cool.”

How can you not root for a guy that radiates that kind of positivity?

That kind of attitude is infectious, and it will absolutely make Tennessee’s quarterback room stronger.

And who knows, maybe Staub surprises everyone this spring and summer and proves to be a viable starting option for Tennessee.
