Tennessee Vols true freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava, the highly touted former five-star recruit who committed to Tennessee in early 2022, made his first career start on Monday in the Citrus Bowl against Iowa.
And he quickly made a believer out of ESPN/SEC Network host Peter Burns.
After watching Nico lead the Vols to a 35-0 win against Iowa, Burns tweeted that Tennessee's young quarterback "is going to be a damn star".
"Vols got something special with him," tweeted Burns on Monday afternoon.
Nico certainly looked like a future star while earning Citrus Bowl MVP honors after Tennessee's dominant win against one of the best defenses in college football.
The California native completed 12 of 19 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 27 yards and three touchdowns.
Those aren't gaudy numbers, but they're pretty impressive when you consider that Iowa had the No. 4 defense in the nation in 2023.
Iamaleava will inevitably have some tough learning moments — as all quarterbacks do — but it sounds like he'll be receiving plenty of hype entering the 2024 season.
