The South Carolina Gamecocks are hoping to be a factor in the SEC East this season, but their season didn't get off to a good start on Saturday night in Charlotte.

South Carolina lost 31-17 to the North Carolina Tar Heels in a neutral site game that was played at Bank of America Stadium (the home of the Carolina Panthers).

Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer offered plenty of excuses for the loss in his post-game press conference — specifically pointing out injuries as an obstacle that South Carolina had to navigate — though he also put the onus on himself.

One of the more bizarre excuses that Beamer made involved the chain crew.

The beginning of the second half was slightly delayed because some members of the chain crew weren't ready to go for the resumption of play.

After the game, Beamer expressed some frustration with the chain crew.

"It's kind of the story of the night," said Beamer while expressing frustration over not having a post-game stat sheet. "The clock was wrong the whole game. We're trying to kick an onside kick to start the second half and we gotta wait on the chain crew because they're eating a hot dog. That's the only disappointing thing about tonight."

South Carolina actually recovered the onside kick and then they preceded to go four-and-out after failing to pick up a fourth down conversion.

Clearly, the chain crew didn't have an impact on South Carolina's strategy, but that didn't stop Beamer from pointing out their hot dog break (or whatever they were doing) as the "only disappointing" thing that happened on Saturday night (again, SC lost 31-17).

Ultimately, the reason the Gamecocks lost on Saturday night in Charlotte is because they totaled negative two rushing yards.

South Carolina went through some tough times last season before eventually finding their way and knocking off a couple of big opponents in Tennessee and Clemson. It's certainly far too early to suggest that the 2023 season will be a struggle for the Gamecocks.

But it's obviously not the start that South Carolina was hoping for. And they definitely have some work to do before the grind of the SEC schedule starts.
