South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer gave a hilarious quote this week about Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker.
The Gamecocks and the Vols will meet in Williams-Brice Stadium on Saturday night at 7:00 PM ET. And Beamer wishes Hooker was still at Virginia Tech…for a couple of reasons.
Beamer played at Virginia Tech under his father, legendary college football coach Frank Beamer.
The South Carolina head coach said this week that as an alumnus of Virginia Tech and someone who has to face Tennessee this week, he wishes Hooker was still in Blacksburg.
"What a great player Hendon Hooker is," said Beamer on Tuesday. "I remember watching him in high school. I was at Georgia, we were trying to recruit another young man from Greensboro. I remember being up there on a Friday night watching that young man play and he was playing against Hendon's team. And I just remember watching him that night and just how talented he was as a quarterback."
"As an alumnus of Virginia Tech, I'm still trying to figure out how he got out of Blacksburg when he was their starting quarterback there and end up at Tennessee," added Beamer. "So for selfish reasons, as an alumnus of Tech and the head coach at South Carolina, wish he was still in Blacksburg for sure."
I'm sure Virginia Tech fans are feeling the same way. Though it's worth noting that part of the reason Hooker is excelling at Tennessee is because of the Vols' offensive coaching staff and their ability to help Hooker reach his full potential.
There's a reason Hooker hit I-81 and headed southwest to Knoxville. I'm guessing if he would've been a Heisman Trophy contender at Virginia Tech, he'd still be in Blacksburg.
Hooker, however, found his perfect home in East Tennessee.
