The last week of September started with some sad news in the college football world.

UCF announced that offensive line coach Shawn Clark passed away on Sunday (Sept. 21) at age 50.

Clark, who served as the head coach at Appalachian State from 2020 to 2024, was hospitalized earlier this month after suffering a medical emergency.

Tennessee Vols QB Joey Aguilar played for Shawn Clark for two seasons at Appalachian State

Tennessee Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar has a special connection to Clark.

Aguilar spent two seasons at Diablo Valley Community College before making the move to Boone, NC, to play for Clark and the Mountaineers.

The California native didn’t initially win the starting quarterback job during his first season (2023) at App State. Still, he took hold of the job after starter Ryan Burger suffered an injury in the 2023 season-opener.

“We’re very proud of Joey. He was not a starter when he came into the season,” said Clark of Aguilar after the 2023 season. “It was a true battle, and Ryan Burger won the job. Through injury, Joey came in, and his first play was a 60-yard touchdown pass.”

Clark is survived by his wife, Jonelle, and children, Giana and Braxton.
