By now, everyone should be well-versed in the history between Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel and former Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops.

But in case this is your first season as a college football fan, here’s a quick recap.

Stoops was hired as the head coach at Oklahoma in 1999. Heupel, who transferred from Snow College, was Stoops’ first quarterback in Norman.

After going 7-5 in 1999, Oklahoma went undefeated in 2000 and won the national championship. Heupel served as a captain on that team, and he’s generally viewed as one of the main reasons why the Sooners unexpectedly won it all in 2000.

Heupel joined the Oklahoma staff as an assistant coach in 2006. He was eventually promoted to offensive coordinator before getting fired by Stoops following the 2014 season.

Heupel supposedly hasn’t had much of a relationship with Stoops over the last 10 years.

Last season was Heupel’s first time returning to Norman as a competitor since he was fired by Stoops.

Bob Stoops picks Oklahoma to beat Tennessee

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to college football fans that Stoops picked Oklahoma to beat Tennessee this week (he never picks the Sooners to lose).

“You don’t need to ask me,” said Stoops on his YouTube channel on Thursday. “Everyone knows I’m always going with the Sooners, and I believe we can [beat the Vols]. Tennessee has been in a lot of tight games, so we have to play well.”

While Stoops doesn’t think his former quarterback will get the win on Saturday night in Knoxville, he did compliment Heupel for the way he handled the Nico Iamaleava situation earlier this spring (which resulted in quarterback Joey Aguilar joining the UT football program).

“It’s like NFL football making a trade,” said Stoops. “You’ve got to give it to them, you know, for Tennessee and Coach Heupel to make that trade and see the vision and what this guy’s (Aguilar) been able to do. So he’s been really good.”

The Vols won an emotional game against the Sooners last season in Norman. While this one won’t be quite as emotional, it’s still a game that Heupel undoubtedly wants to win very badly.

Tennessee and Oklahoma kick off at 7:30 PM ET on Saturday night.
