‘I’ll be shocked if he plays against Oklahoma, but maybe he guts through it’ – Vols insider shares latest update on key Tennessee starter
The Tennessee Vols could be without a couple of key starters against the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night.
The Tennessee Vols could be without a couple of key defensive starters on Saturday night against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Vols junior linebacker Arion Carter missed last weekend’s game against the Kentucky Wildcats due to a turf toe injury (in both toes).
VolQuest’s Austin Price joined 104.5 The Zone’s Ramon and Will on Tuesday, and he shared the latest update on Carter ahead of the Oklahoma game.
“I still will be shocked if he plays this week against Oklahoma, but maybe he guts through it,” said Price when asked about Carter. “He was gutting through it the previous few games. But I think he ultimately needs some rest. And if you don’t play him this weekend, and if you can get by this weekend and get a win, you go into a bye week, then you go into New Mexico State (week).
“Then you’d have almost five full weeks in between playing at Alabama and playing at Florida, and that would give him some real time to potentially get that thing much more ready to go. One of the toes is worse than the other.”
Carter leads Tennessee in tackles with 61 despite not playing last Saturday against Kentucky.
Will Vols cornerback Colton Hood play against the Sooners?
Vols starting cornerback Colton Hood suffered an injury in the win against Kentucky that has put his status for the Oklahoma game in doubt.
Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel told reporters to “stay tuned to the injury report” when asked about Hood’s status on Monday.
According to Price, Hood is dealing with a pulled calf muscle.
“As for Colton Hood, he’s got a pulled muscle in his calf,” said Price. “He will continue to rehab all week and see if he can be able to be a go for Saturday night.”
If Hood can’t go on Saturday, William Wright and Ty Redmond will likely start at cornerback, with true freshman cornerback Tim Merritt rotating in at times.
Tennessee and Oklahoma will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
