The South Carolina Gamecocks couldn't beat the Tennessee Vols on the field last weekend, so now they're trying to get an off-the-field win against UT football.

According to 247Sports, South Carolina extended an offer to 2024 four-star wide receiver Braylon Staley on Wednesday night.

Staley, who has been committed to Tennessee since June 30, is from Johnston, SC, which is just an hour southwest of Columbia.

The 6-foot/180 lb wide receiver is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 player in the state of South Carolina and the No. 23 wide receiver in the 2024 recruiting class.

247Sports reported that Staley received the offer from South Carolina on Wednesday after speaking with Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, and wide receivers coach Justin Stepp.

Anytime an in-state program offers a player that's committed to an out-of-state program, there's reason for concern.

But South Carolina is attempting to get involved in Staley's recruitment extremely late in the recruiting cycle. It's going to be tough for the Gamecocks to make up ground with only two months to go until the early signing period in December.

It's always possible that South Carolina could flip Staley, but it feels unlikely with the Vols' coaching staff much further down the road in their relationship with Staley than the Gamecocks are at this point.

Speaking of UT's coaching staff, that was one of the main reasons why Staley committed to the Vols in June.

“I love (Tennessee offensive coordinator Joey) Halzle,” said Staley to GoVols247 after he announced his commitment. “I love Coach (Josh) Heupel, love Coach (Kelsey) Pope. All the coaches on the coaching staff, they greet me every time they see me. Man, I just love the culture here.”

Tennessee's 2024 recruiting class, which has 20 commits, is currently ranked No. 9 in the nation.

Staley, according to 247Sports' composite rankings, is Tennessee's fourth-highest rated 2024 commit.
