Spring practice got started for the Tennessee Vols on Monday, which means true freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon was on the practice field for the first time since arriving on Rocky Top.

Brandon, a former five-star recruit from Greensboro, NC, is battling redshirt freshman George MacIntyre and Colorado Buffaloes transfer Ryan Staub for the starting quarterback job.

Vols head coach Josh Heupel told reporters on Monday that they shouldn’t expect a starter to be named this spring.

“Don’t expect a guy to be named here during the course of spring ball,” said Heupel. “I think it’s important that all the guys in that room learn and grow throughout the course of spring, and also have a chance to go back in your summer months, digest it, reinstall, and come back a much better player and compete and earn it in front of their teammates as you get into (fall) training camp.”

One thing is already evident about Faizon Brandon

Spring practice means fresh videos of Tennessee players in action for fans to enjoy.

Several of those videos, via local media outlets that cover Tennessee football in person daily, began circulating on Monday.

And the videos of Brandon quickly caught the attention of Vols fans.

It’s not that Brandon looked like the second coming of Peyton Manning — there’s not much, performance wise, to glean from routes on air. Instead, it was Brandon’s physicality that was immediately noticed by fans.

The North Carolina native should technically still be in high school right now, yet he already looks like a veteran college football player from a physical standpoint.

MacIntyre is viewed by many as the favorite to win the job, due to his one season of experience in Heupel’s system.

Brandon, however, has an advantage over MacIntyre due to his already-impressive physicality (the difference between the two quarterbacks in the video above is quite noticeable).

Ultimately, the quarterback that operates the offense the most efficiently will win this battle. But it’s hard not to think that Brandon will hold up better over the course of the season than MacIntyre — at least based on their current frames.
