The Tennessee Vols lost to the Florida Gators last weekend in Gainesville because they were out-played and out-coached.
There aren't many folks on either side of the rivalry that feel differently.
The officiating in the game, however, was severely tilted toward Florida. I know every fan base loves to complain about officiating after a tough loss, but Vols fans have every right to be perturbed after what went down in the Swamp last Saturday night.
Officials missed multiple holding calls, they called a weak "blindside block" on Tennessee tight end McCallan Castles, and at one point, an official kicked the ball after it had been spotted, which allowed Florida's defense to substitute (and UT didn't convert the fourth down attempt on that play).
Maybe Tennessee gets back into the game if a couple of calls aren't missed. And then who knows what happens (though to be fair, UT had some other chances and they squandered them).
Former Florida head coach Steve Spurrier joined the "Another Dooley Noted Podcast" this week and he made some comments about the officiating in Florida's win over Tennessee.
"We did get some gracious calls," said Spurrier while discussing the game. "Some games you do, some games you don't. On one of those fourth-and-ones, they got up there real fast and the referee stopped the clock (after the ball was kicked by an official) and then we were able to get our big guys in, got in sort of a goal line defense and they left the same play on, so we had them for a two or three yard loss."
"Sometimes you get breaks like that, sometimes they go against you," added Spurrier. "Tennessee had a tough day."
Spurrier also noted that Tennessee doesn't have wide receiver Jalin Hyatt out wide anymore, which has left a major void in the Vols' offense.
"They don't have the same team they had last year," said Spurrier.
It's not often that Tennessee fans will agree with Spurrier, but it's hard not to agree with these comments. The officiating was definitely in Florida's favor and the Vols are certainly missing Hyatt. I'm not sure how you can argue with either point from Spurrier.
