On the biggest football day of the year for Tennessee Vol fans, it could be one of the worst regarding the baseball program in a long time.

According to Ken Rosenthal, Andrew Baggarly, and Brittany Ghiroli of The Athletic, the San Francisco Giants are closing in on hiring Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello as their next manager.

Giants closing in on hiring Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello, per Rosenthal and others

Per The Athletic report, Vitello’s response regarding the situation were: “There is nothing to confirm.” The Giants did not respond to respond to a request for the report.

Losing Vitello would be nothing short of a Mike-Tyson-like shot to the gut for Tennessee Vol fans. Vitello has transformed the UT baseball program from an afterthought in the SEC to one of the elite programs in the country. Tennessee has made it to the College World Series in 2021, 2023, and 2024 on his watch, becoming the first #1 seed since 1999 to win the national championship, which was the program’s first.

His style of wearing his emotions on his sleeve, his at times energetic managerial style, and his willingness to tell things like they are made Vol fans love him and opposing fans hate him.

Nothing is done until the name is on the dotted line, and we’ll see if Vitello indeed decides to stay at home when all is said and done. Eleventh hour decisions to change minds sometimes happen. But right now, there is very much cause for concern about the future of Tennessee’s shining baseball program with Vitello at the helm.
