An umpire had a message for Tennessee’s Josh Elander about the Vols’ newest star while he was leaving the field
Tennessee’s rising star left an impression on even the umpires over the weekend.
Tennessee’s Blaine Brown had a jaw-dropping weekend in his first action as a Volunteer. In his first ten innings during Saturday’s double header, the Rice transfer swatted three home runs.
The power display was lost on no one inside the stadium. And, as it turns out, that also includes the umpires.
Josh Elander addressed the media after the doubleheader, and he had a funny anecdote about one of the umpires while he was coming off the field after the conclusion of the second game.
Josh Elander said an umpire made a quip to him about Blaine Brown finally making an out
“No, not at all,” Elander said about whether he was surprised by anything Brown did on Saturday. “Special player. I just think he’s been getting better each and every day.
“It’s funny, I was jogging by off the field at the end of the game. Umpire was like, ‘well, at least he finally got out.’ He hit one right to the (warning) track right there. But pretty cool to see him having fun, and playing loose, and he’s just, slow heart rate, just very gifted. We’re expecting special things from Blaine all year long.”
Brown’s performance on Saturday certainly merited the tongue in cheek quip that the umpire made to Elander after the game. After a 2-5 performance in Friday’s opener, Brown followed that up by going 3-5 with two home runs in Saturday’s first game, a 5-1 Tennessee win. Brown clubbed out two home runs to right center, the first one being a three-run shot to open up the game.
In game two, Brown got the scoring started for the Vols in the first with an opposite field home run. He finished the game with three hits in four plate appearances. For the day, he was 6-9 at the plate.
Brown could become appointment television with his hitting skills. He had a weekend that certainly left those in attendance in awe — both those in the stands and the folks calling the balls and strikes.
