The Tennessee Volunteers are set to begin the defense of their College World Series title on Friday evening in the second game of the Knoxville regional against Miami (OH).
Vols first baseman Andrew Fischer knows there have been some special moments at Lindsey Nelson Stadium over the last five seasons, and he wants UT fans to be ready for more of that this weekend.
Fischer is, of course, referencing the moment from 2021 in the Vols' opening game of the Knoxville regional. Down 8-5 to 4 seed Wright State with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Drew Gilbert took a hanging curveball and sent it halfway to Maryville over the right field wall, sending off one of the wildest celebrations in the history of Lindsey Nelson Stadium. Tennessee would go on to win the regional before sweeping LSU to reach the College World Series for the first time since 2005.
The Vols have had, of course, several other key thrilling moments in Knoxville – and elsewhere – since. Jordan Beck's double against Georgia Tech with UT down 4-3 in the ninth spurred a 6 spot in the frame that carried UT to victory in 2022. Or the Vols' seven-inning game in the decisive Game 3 of last year's Super Regionals against Evansville to book a ticket to Omaha.
There's been no shortage of thrilling plays in Knoxville this year, and the Vols – with Fischer, Gavin Kilen, Levi Clark, and others – have the horses to deliver big hits again this year to send the Vols on what their fans hope is another deep postseason run.
We'll find out soon enough if Fischer and his teammates can add to the Vols' recent chain of thrilling moments, as UT's regional play gets underway at 6:00 pm ET on ESPNU.
One of Tennessee’s regional opponents has a strength that the Vols will have to handle better than they have in 2025
The Vols have one of the best teams in the country in a key area in their region
