MLB players might be locked out right now — spring training has been delayed thanks to the owners — but Tennessee baseball is officially back and picking up where they left off last season.
The Vols opened the 2022 season on Friday in Knoxville with a home matchup against Georgia Southern.
And they were quickly up to some shenanigans (check out this article to see what Arkansas baseball coach Dave Van Horn had to say this week about teams having fun in the dugout).
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Vols third baseman Trey Lipscomb hit the first home run of the season for Tennessee. After he rounded the bases, he donned the "daddy" hat that was made famous last season. And then he had a Joe Namath-like cheetah print (or some other animal print) jacket placed on him.
It's hard to tell in this video from Volunteer Country on SI's Jake Nichols, but you can see the jacket being placed on Lipscomb at the end of the clip.
This is fantastic. I know there are some traditionalists who probably hate this, but I love it. And I'm a quintessential baseball guy — it's easily my favorite sport.
This Vols baseball team has a ton of personality. And it all starts with the head coach. Staying loose while staying focused is what makes a good team a great team. It's obvious that UT head coach Tony Vitello has found a nice balance.
