The Tennessee Vols baseball program dropped the series-opener against the Alabama Crimson Tide on Thursday evening, falling 6-5 in Tuscaloosa.
Tennessee was without one of its best players on Thursday as junior infielder Gavin Kilen missed the game while dealing with a hamstring injury.
Kilen, a Louisville transfer who is in his first season with the Volunteers, is hitting .431 this season with 10 home runs, 25 RBIs, and five stolen bases.
True freshman Manny Marin started in place of Kilen against Alabama, going 0-for-3 with a walk.
Tennessee baseball coach Tony Vitello was asked during an in-game interview with ESPNU about Kilen's status for the rest of the series against Alabama.
Vitello noted that Kilen remains "day to day" and will likely only be available to pinch hit in the final two games of the series against Alabama.
The Vols have a midweek game against Queens next Tuesday in Knoxville before taking on the South Carolina Gamecocks in a three-game series in Columbia that begins next Friday night.
There's no doubt that Tennessee will miss Kilen's bat in the lineup, but the Vols will have to find a way to scratch out a win or two against Alabama without the standout infielder.
