The Colorado Rockies have been a train wreck of perhaps historic proportions in this early 2025 MLB season. At 7-33, they're on pace for the worst record in league history.
That was bad enough to earn manager Bud Black his walking papers over the weekend. And that dismissal was enough to earn a curious response from Dave Roberts, manager of the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.
In other words, Roberts sees the Rockies' roster as being a pile of decade-old lemons where Black was asked to make lemonade. And he has a point, as Colorado has been just terrible as far as performance by the players on the field. There has to be accountability there from the players.
Well, except for one player, who's in the midst of a breakout year – former Tennessee fan favorite Mike Honcho.
Jordan Beck, the former Tennessee Vols standout, is having a terrific season in the Mile High City for the Rockies. His stat line this year is a .273 average with 6 home runs, 13 RBIs, an on-base percentage of .330, and an OPS of .886. His OPS leads the team by a significant margin, he's tied for the team lead in home runs, leads all players with 4 steals, and is second on the team in batting average.
From where Beck was in 2024, that's a very big step forward. Last year, Beck struggled in his first season as a rookie. Across 55 games, he posted a .188 average, .521 OPS, on-base percentage of .245, 3 home runs, and 13 RBI.
Beck has been one of the pleasant surprises this year in the league, but naturally it's been lost in the shadow of one of the most underwhelming seasons we've seen in a long time in MLB. Perhaps if he can continue his strong start to the season, he could earn consideration to be Colorado's 2025 MLB All-Star game representative.
