If there's one person in Knoxville who could probably walk into a bar or restaurant and get a drink or meal bought for her, it's University of Tennessee chancellor Donde Plowman.
And that might not have been the case just 24 hours ago. Plowman earned the respect and admiration of Tennessee fans on Tuesday when her sharply worded letter in response to the NCAA opening an investigation into Tennessee for alleged NIL violations was made public.
That respect was on full display inside Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday night before the Tennessee men's basketball team tipped off against the South Carolina Gamecocks. She was introduced, and the cheers were loud from the still-gathering crowd.
Plowman issued a letter dated Monday, January 29 directed to NCAA president Charlie Baker. Her letter included very pointed phrases relating to the NCAA's investigation such as "factually untrue", "procedurally flawed", and "intellectually dishonest".
The letter also reminds Baker that he had the opportunity to meet with Plowman and Tennessee athletic director Danny White in person in December to discuss the alleged violations, but Baker allegedly refused to do so.
It appears clear that Plowman will go to the mat to defend the University of Tennessee from an overzealous investigation for purported violations of poorly defined rules. Tennessee fans obviously respect her greatly for that.
