Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones goes viral for crashing out after Arkansas State lost because of his brutal clock management
Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones had a rough Thursday night.
Former Tennessee Vols head coach Butch Jones, who is in his fifth season as the head coach of the Arkansas State Red Wolves, didn’t have a great Thursday night.
Arkansas State lost, 34-30, to Louisiana in a game that featured a chaotic ending, thanks in large part to some brutal clock management from Jones.
Butch Jones crashes out after Louisiana stops Arkansas State at the goal line to end the game
Louisiana won the game on Thursday night after stopping Arkansas State at the goal line.
The officials blew the whistle late, which led to a chaotic scene at the end of the game.
As Jones walked off the field, he threw quite the temper tantrum, which Vols fans will certainly recognize.
That is…not normal behavior, and don’t even mention Nick Saban. There was a method to his madness…there’s no method to Butch’s madness.
Part of the reason the Red Wolves ended up in that situation is because Jones allowed nine seconds to run off the clock, despite having a timeout, which absolutely cost Arkansas State a play or two (and it probably cost them the win).
After the game, Jones explained his decision not to call a timeout after a completion with 18 seconds left in the game.
“It worked for us all year,” said Jones. “It gave us a two-play sequence. We also wanted to go tempo, and we liked our play. And so it came down to that. But we took a little bit too long. But we wanted to try to have where we could possibly run the ball, call timeout, and give us some flexibility down the road.
“I thought we managed it well. We had a catastrophic missed assignment on the last play. It comes down to execution. We knew what they were going to be in. We practiced it all week.
And that happens. People make mistakes. We all make mistakes. But we can’t make mistakes at that stage of the game.”
Arkansas State needs to beat Appalachian State next week to reach bowl eligibility for the third straight season.
