The Tennessee Vols' offensive line should have plenty of energy in 2023 thanks to senior guard Javontez Spraggins.
Spraggins, who started all 13 games at right guard for the Vols last season, was described on Monday by Tennessee offensive line coach Glen Elarbee as "energetic" and "juicy".
"Just such a growth out of him," said Elarbee when asked about Spraggins. "And the energy, that guy is nonstop. I mean, every day he gets it going. There’s not a more energetic, juicy guy on the field, play in [and] play out. And I think guys thrive off that, because it’s energy. But also, when he goes on the field, he backs it up, man. It’s physicality. It’s not a fake, rah-rah energy. He’s out there competing and he wants the best. And I couldn’t be prouder of the way he’s playing. And just the leadership that he’s showing and demanding from his teammates. It’s awesome."
The leadership aspect that Spraggins is displaying ahead of the 2023 season should help elevate the play of the entire offensive line.
“I think Spraggs always had energy, juice, effort," explained Elarbee. "I think he would try to lead. It was just like a missile with a fin missing. Just wasn’t always just right on the mark. But now that guy’s got pinpoint accuracy with every word that comes out of his mouth. He’s on it. He knows what the pulse of the situation is, what needs to be fixed, what direction as an offensive line, as a team we need to go, young guys, everything. Just super, super proud of him.”
Spraggins' was a vital part of Tennessee's success along the offensive line last season.
Getting him back for another season is absolutely huge for the Vols. And even more exciting for UT fans is that it sounds like Spraggins has taken his game up a notch this offseason. That's tough to do considering Spraggins gave up just two sacks on 891 snaps last season, but it certainly appears that the East Saint Louis native will enter the 2023 season poised to play at a even higher level than he did last season.
