Tennessee Football: 3 top recruits the Vols are still targeting
The Tennessee Vols signed 21 players on the first day of the early signing period, giving UT a top 10 2020 recruiting class for the moment. (That's depending on which recruiting service you prefer. The Tennessee Vols signed 21 players on the first day of the early signing period, giving UT a top 10 2020 recruiting class for the moment.
(That's depending on which recruiting service you prefer. Tennessee has the No. 9 class according to Rivals and the No. 15 class according to 247Sports.)
Tennessee won't publicly reveal how many players they plan to sign in their 2020 recruiting class, but various reports have suggested the number is 27. That means the Vols have six spots left to fill between now (the final two days in the early signing period) and the traditional signing day in February.
There are still some immensely talented players still on the Vols' recruiting wish list. Here are three that I think Tennessee will focus on landing.
Darnell Washington — TE — 5-star
This one won't be over until Washington signs somewhere (if he hasn't already).
The dynamic five-star recruit from Las Vegas tweeted on Tuesday that he wasn't signing on Wednesday.
Late on Wednesday, however, Washington tweeted an emoji of a pen and paper.
No one is quite sure what it means, but the original plan was for Washington to sign and then announce his decision in early January. Of course, it's nearly impossible to keep signing somewhere quiet for that long. This battle is between Tennessee and Georgia. Most folks seem to think the Bulldogs have the edge, but the Vols are going to keep pursuing Washington until he's officially off the market.
Jay Hardy — DT — 4-star
Hardy, a Chattanooga native, looked like a Tennessee lock, right up until he committed to Auburn in early November (there was supposedly even a UT commitment video that had been made).
The decision by Hardy to delay his signing until February means the Vols still have a decent shot at landing the talented defensive tackle.
Hardy is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 2 player in the state of Tennessee and the No. 99 overall recruit in the nation.
Dee Beckwith — ATH — 4-star
Beckwith is an extremely talented dual-sport athlete from Alabama. He has offers from at least Florida, Ole Miss and Tennessee to play football and basketball.
The four-star athlete could create massive mismatches at tight end for Tennessee. Or he could be a "bigger" wide receiver that would create coverage nightmares.
Beckwith has visited Tennessee and Florida multiple times over the last month. He's also visited Ole Miss.
