A key Tennessee Vols commit essentially reaffirmed his commitment to UT this week.
2024 four-star quarterback Jake Merklinger spoke to On3 this week about his recruitment and he left no doubt that he's more than happy with his decision to commit to Tennessee earlier this year.
“I found my spot to call home and I know I am going to Tennessee,” said Merklinger to On3. “Since I committed, things have going well. I knew where I wanted to go and my mind is made up. It has really been like a relief. Communication is still great with the coaches and I can’t wait to get up there.”
Merklinger's commitment to Tennessee was never in question before his recent comments, but I'm sure it's still nice for Vols fans to hear him reaffirm his commitment to UT — especially after the Volunteers' tough road loss to Missouri.
Merklinger, 6-foot-3/195 lbs from Savannah, GA, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 8 quarterback in the nation and the No. 15 overall player in the state of Georgia. He's also rated as the No. 109 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class.
The Georgia native will likely serve as Tennessee's primary backup quarterback next season with Nico Iamaleava expected to serve as the Vols' starter.
Merklinger is teammates at Calvary Day School with four-star tight end Michael Smith, a South Carolina commit that Tennessee would love to flip.
Smith is expected to visit Tennessee this weekend for the Vols' game against Georgia.
