When the Arizona Cardinals traded for Josh Dobbs in late August, the plan was for the former Tennessee Vols standout to hold down the starting quarterback spot until Kyler Murray's return from the torn ACL he suffered last season.
That might still be the plan for the Cardinals, though Dobbs' strong play through the first four games of the 2023 season puts Arizona in an interesting situation.
The team seems to be playing well with Dobbs at the helm. And before the season started, the feeling was that Arizona might be tanking this season in an effort to land superstar USC quarterback Caleb Williams — seemingly indicating that Murray isn't the future for the Cardinals.
Murray was eligible to come off the PUP list this week (which would mean he could begin practicing with the Cardinals), but that wasn't the case. Arizona decided against removing Murray from the PUP list this week.
ESPN's Adam Schefter reported last weekend that Murray is still "weeks away" from re-joining the Cardinals. Once Murray is removed from the PUP list, Arizona will have 21 days to activate him. If they don't activate him in that 21-day window, Murray would have to remain on the PUP list for the rest of the season (essentially ending his season).
It's unclear how the Cardinals will handle the Murray situation moving forward. But for now, it looks like Dobbs is going to receive at least 2-3 more starts. And if he continues to perform well, that number could grow.
Arizona's next three games are against the Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle Seahawks.
