Tennessee Vols quarterback Joe Milton had one of his best games of his career this past week in UT's 33-27 win against the Kentucky Wildcats.
Milton completed 18-of-21 passes for 228 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 26 yards.
Those obviously aren't gaudy numbers. But the performance was impressive because of how Milton totaled his yards. He made a few nice off-schedule plays and he picked up some important yards with his legs. It was the most comfortable that Milton has looked in the offense this season.
Vols head coach Josh Heupel spoke about Milton's performance against Kentucky during his weekly appearance on Vol Calls on Wednesday night.
The third-year Tennessee head coach noted that he was impressed by the way Milton was able to move around and make plays.
“Joe was rock solid in his performance," said Heupel. "Great decision-making, accurate with the football. Threw some really nice deep balls. When there was pressure inside of the pocket, [he] was timely in getting out of the pocket. Probably the best scramble day that we’ve had throwing the football down the field since I’ve been here at Tennessee. Did a lot of positive things."
"The ability to finish out the game in the fourth quarter with the football and finish it out the right way was huge, too," added Heupel. "Love seeing that from the offense. Some situational football that takes place in that, that was big, too. Joe does a great job sliding, staying inbounds under two minutes on the clock."
Milton was banged up for most of the month of September, which limited his effectiveness — especially with his legs. Now that Milton is healthier, he appears much more comfortable in the offense. And the Vols' offense looks like it's starting to hit its stride. Tennessee's best football of the season could be on the way in the final month of the season.
