'Not even close, terrible' — Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz takes a shot at Neyland Stadium during SEC Media Days for something that all visiting coaches hate
A number of SEC coaches were asked at SEC Media Days about something that apparently is universal among all SEC schools: what are visiting locker rooms like? A number of SEC coaches were asked at SEC Media Days about something that apparently is universal among all SEC schools: what are visiting locker rooms like? Particularly, who has the best among the schools?
Most coaches laughed and acknowledged that they're universally bad, which is interesting in the year 2025. However, Missouri's Eli Drinkwitz had an answer. Drinkwitz drew ire from Tennessee fans during the 2023 season for the bizarro moment during the postgame handshake when he had a truncated handshake with Josh Heupel with a "we stand on business, Josh" comment.
Drinkwitz, with a sly grin, didn't answer who the best was, but had a clear answer for the worst.
"The worst? Tennessee. Not even close. Terrible," Drinkwitz replied.
Now, before Tennessee fans get too mad at the outspoken head coach, in a way, getting acknowledged as having the worst visiting locker room isn't necessarily a bad thing. After all, a coach saying that an opponent made them feel comfortable and welcome isn't something you'd want to hear about your school. Instead, at least according to Drinkwitz, the Tigers haven't been too comfortable when getting suited up to take the field against the Vols in Knoxville.
Then again, the Tigers weren't exactly too comfortable the last time they've been on the field there either, getting their doors blown off 66-24 late in the 2022 season.
But that's been the motto for visiting teams in Knoxville under Josh Heupel, who sports a 25-4 home slate in his four years and 20-1 over the last three. From an uncomfortable pregame experience to heading home with a loss, it sounds like it's been an overall unpleasant experience for most teams not named Georgia inside Neyland Stadium since Heupel has taken over the program.
We'll find out on September 13 if Tennessee can finally add the Bulldogs to the list of dissatisfied guests leaving town.
