It appears as though Tennessee Vol fans can cancel those trips to Lincoln, Nebraska in the fall of 2026.  And Tennessee now has a couple of big holes in their 2026 and 2027 schedules they'll have to fill.

ESPN college football reporter Pete Thamel tweeted on Friday that Tennessee and Nebraska "are canceling their upcoming football series".  Tennessee AD Danny White was quick to correct Thamel about who the culprit truly was regarding the cancellations: Nebraska.

According to Thamel, Nebraska canceled the home and home series between the schools that had been in place since 2006 because of the Cornhuskers wanting to secure an eighth home game in 2027.  Nebraska will be in scheduled renovations during that time with reduced stadium capacity and apparently wanted to up their home game count to offset the fewer fans per game.

That's tough on two fronts for Tennessee.  First, it obviously would have been an interesting pair of games for Tennessee fans.  Tennessee and Nebraska fans travel in droves and would have filled up each other's home venues at significant levels for the games. The Vols and Cornhuskers met during the teams' late-90s hey days in bowl games.  Nebraska beat Tennessee in the 1997-98 Orange Bowl to secure a share of the national title.  They also got the best of the Vols in the 1999-2000 Fiesta Bowl 31-21.  Tennessee won the most recent matchup in the 2016 Music City Bowl 38-24.

The other issue is that Tennessee will now have to scramble to find opponents for both years, which is particularly challenging for the 2026 season.  As the SEC requires their schools to play at least one non-conference game against a Power Four opponent or Notre Dame, White will have his work cut out to try and find a replacement at the eleventh hour.
