Second former Tennessee Vols teammate of Jauan Jennings attempting to join him in San Francisco
A VFL is trying to resurrect his career on the West Coast
San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings almost had a former teammate join him in the Bay Area for the Niners’ training camp. It appears another player he shared a locker room with is getting a look at becoming his teammate once again.
The NFL released its list of transactions on Wednesday, and former Tennessee WR Marquez Callaway was listed as having a tryout with the 49ers.
Callaway and Jennings, who is currently dealing with a calf injury, played several years together as Tennessee Volunteers. Both men played from 2016-2019 for Butch Jones and Jeremy Pruitt. Callaway went undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, signing with the New Orleans Saints. He spent four years with the New Orleans Saints, from 2020-2023. His best season came in 2021, when he appeared in 17 games and totaled 46 catches on 84 targets for 698 yards with 6 touchdowns. For his career, he’s totaled 83 catches for 1069 yards and 7 touchdowns over 47 games with 17 starts.
Callaway becomes the second former Vol to try out for the Niners recently, as Ramel Keyton tried out for the Niners last week. He ultimately signed with the Tennessee Titans after Treylon Burks suffered a collarbone injury. Keyton played with Callaway and Jennings for the Vols during the 2019 season.
We’ll find out in the coming day or two if the former Vol did enough to convince the Niners’ staff to give him a chance to resurrect his career with the perennial NFC contender.
