Former Tennessee Vol made the shortest possible trip to find his new NFL team on Monday
A VFL found a new opportunity without having to leave town
McCallan Castles was the unfortunate choice for the Los Angeles Chargers after they reunited with franchise legend Keenan Allen last Thursday.
However, the former Tennessee Vol found a new home quickly – and without having to basically move one inch. The Los Angeles Rams announced on Monday that they signed Castles.
Castles spent time with the Chargers in Los Angeles last year on the practice squad, so he already had his roots in the Los Angeles area. Now, he joins the city’s other franchise that shares the same stadium. Thus, it’s as easy of a transition as possible for the former Vol.
As far as opportunity, the path to the 53-man roster could be tougher than he faced when he was with his old Los Angeles squad. The Rams have Tyler Higbee as their top tight end, who is a solid contributor to their offense. They spent a second-round pick on Oregon tight end Terrance Ferguson. Overall they have five tight ends on the roster who are ahead of Castles. As such, the path to sticking around is a very steep one for the former Tennessee tight end. Impressing for a potential practice squad spot is the more likely option.
We’ll see in the next couple of weeks if Castles can leave enough of an impression to earn that opportunity, or perhaps another shot elsewhere.
