The Minnesota Vikings seemed to be in serious trouble after losing starting QB Kirk Cousins for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. A well-traveled replacement has not just kept the Vikings afloat. He's perhaps made them even better.
Josh Dobbs completed 23 of 34 attempts for 268 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, leading the Vikings to a 27-19 win over the New Orleans Saints. The win is the team's fifth straight victory, which is the longest current streak in the NFL. It's Dobbs' second win in two appearances as Minnesota's starting quarterback since coming over from Arizona at the trade deadline.
The former Tennessee Volunteer picked up red hot from last week's strong showing in Minnesota's 31-28 win over Atlanta. He led the Vikings to points on four of Minnesota's five first half drives, including touchdowns on the Vikings' final three drives of the half to build a commanding 24-3 lead going into the locker room.
Dobbs threw for 220 yards on 18/22 passing in the first half alone and added his second rushing touchdown as a Viking, a nifty seven-yard scamper after dodging pressure.
The Saints would rally in the second half and make a game of it, with Jameis Winston coming in for Derek Carr, who reportedly left the game with a concussion. However, the strong performance by Dobbs and the Vikings offense built a 27-3 lead in the third quarter, which proved to be enough of a cushion.
The Vikings' season appeared shot with the injury to Cousins. Now Minnesota sits at 6-4 in the NFC North, which has them even with the first place Detroit Lions in the win column (with the Lions still playing against the Chargers) and in a Wild Card slot in the NFC.
And with Dobbs settling in with his new teammates and offensive system, they aren't showing signs of slowing down anytime soon.
