An interesting but improbable solution

The breakup between Nico Iamaleava and the Tennessee Volunteers was one of the biggest stories of the college football offseason. It was a situation that drew the ever-evolving NIL landscape and the enforceability (or lack thereof) of agreements between players, collectives, and schools into the public eye.

Naturally, that’s caused some reaction, and even jokes poked at the situation among some. That includes the popular SEC Shorts recurring skit that Renasant sponsors during the college football season. From upsets to college football playoff rankings, the skit takes its aim at everyone.

They did just that on Monday morning with Tennessee and the transfer portal, but they might have come up with an interesting idea in the process.

The NIL era has created a situation where it’s tough to invest emotionally and financially in players as much as in previous years. Players jump ship in the face of adversity, among other reasons, at the drop of a hat, looking for a better opportunity or more money (or both) elsewhere. That makes it tough to buy anything with anyone’s jersey and expect.

A “rosterflex” jersey is one that would, amusingly, solve the issue with removable numbers, names, and patches. It’s also one that, looking at the responses to the skit, is one that some folks would find actually interesting.

However, it’s also one that would raise potential significant questions about NIL rights, compensation, etc. for fans who switch off players routinely. Given many players earn money from the sale of their jerseys, that’s a bit of a muddled situation.

Until someone wiser than me comes up with a solution, it’s hard to see how something like that would ever come to pass. For now, all we can do is laugh at the situation that college football has devolved into in the NIL era. Not much else you can do.
