Tennessee wide receiver Bru McCoy's season-ending ankle injury in the Vols' 41-20 win over South Carolina was gut-wrenching thing to watch. The UT wide receiver had done everything he was asked to do on the field this season, whether it was a pass thrown in his direction or blocking down the field.
However, despite undergoing successful surgery to repair the fracture-dislocation of his ankle, McCoy isn't done with his work of making a positive impact in the Knoxville community.
Before the season, McCoy announced that he would be partnering with the Peyton Walker Foundation and others to form the Huddle for Hearts program, in which an AED device would be given to a local underprivileged community for each touchdown that he scored during the season.
The Peyton Walker Foundation released a statement on Monday noting they are working with the school regarding alterations to McCoy's NIL deal so that AED devices can still be donated.
To comply with NIL regulations, The Peyton Walker Foundation and the McCoy Family are in discussions with Tennessee regarding making changes to Bru’s current campaign to ensure that AEDs will still be donated this season to under-served and high-need youth sports organizations. Further, the foundation is calling upon fans to "Rally for Bru" by providing donations to the Foundation at HuddleForHearts.org, which can then be used to purchase and donate AED devices in the name of McCoy.
“We would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to check in on Bru and sent thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement. While we are heartbroken this happened, we hope to continue his mission with Huddle for HeartsTM and providing CPR training and AEDs to under-served communities,” said Bru’s mom, Shelby McCoy, through the statement.
McCoy has one year of eligibility remaining, so he could potentially return and play for the Vols next season. However, if he doesn't, it's clear that McCoy's good works and legacy of giving will continue even once he has left Knoxville.
