It was revealed on Wednesday by 247 Sports that it had dropped the Tennessee Volunteers' top football recruit George MacIntyre down significantly in its most recent five-star rankings released on Wednesday. MacIntyre dropped around 20 spots to the #30 overall recruit and #5 quarterback prospect, the last five-star quarterback of the group.
From the sound of 247 Sports' national recruiting analyst Cooper Petagna, MacIntyre is almost at in interchangeable position as a five star with a couple of four-star quarterbacks ranked just below the Vols' top recruit.
"I think you look at [Texas A&M commit] Husan Longstreet and I think you look at George MacIntyre," Petagna said during the YouTube broadcast on Wednesday. "I think both of those guys are in a position right now – you could easily swap both of those guys with [Missouri commit] Matt Zollers or [SMU commit] Keelon Russell, and if it was me, Andrew [Ivins], and the rest of the scouting team, I think we'd be ok with it. Right now it's more of a timeline thing. We want to see these guys compete against each other, and that's kind of where we are. So the other two are hard-charging when you talk about Zollers, when you talk about Keelon Russell. Everything that they bring to the table. Two guys that are trending in the right direction."
Petagna went on to emphasize the importance of the Elite 11 camp for MacIntyre, which is taking place on June 18 in Los Angeles.
"George MacIntyre, for him, he's got to bounce back. The two live evaluations have been subpar, to be brutally honest, when seeing him in person. Not to say that there isn't a lot to like about George MacIntyre, but in terms of what we expected for a five-star caliber player, this is kind of his last audition. I want to see how he bounces back. I believe that's all on public record here, talking about it. So, it's going to be interesting to see that."
Petagna – and from the sounds of it, other members of the 247 Sports' recruiting team – are putting a lot of stock into two camps this offseason where they saw MacIntyre, it seems. Apparently, more stock than they've seen watching actual football games in pads and helmets.
But recruiting services, to be somewhat fair about it, have to find ways to justify their existences in the offseason. They will look at anything they can to find reasons to move players around and create some talking points.
MacIntyre will get the chance to put his name back up higher on the rankings if he can turn some heads at the Elite 11 camp. Or he could end up seeing an even further drop, given the repeated concerns Petagna made over the live broadcast on Wednesday and the praise for the two signal callers on MacIntyre's heels.
