Huge Tennessee Vols recruiting flip stomps on criticism of Josh Heupel’s offense by stealing the commitment of one of the top players of the 2026 class
A huge statement for the program.
Josh Heupel’s offense has come under fire this week from some in the media as the Tennessee Vols look to start off their fifth season on his watch this Saturday against Syracuse in Atlanta.
However, it appears as though there’s still plenty of top-level talent who want to come to Knoxville and play for him, including one of the very top names of the 2026 recruiting class.
According to On3 Sports’ Hayes Fawcett, five-star wide receiver Tristen Keys flipped his commitment from LSU to Tennessee on Thursday, handing Heupel an enormous recruiting win less than two days before getting Tennessee’s season underway.
Keys is the #1 wide receiver, a five-star recruit, and the #7 player overall in the 2026 class according to On3 Sports/Rivals. 247 Sports has him as the #1 wide receiver and #4 overall player in the class.
Despite committing to LSU in March, Keys continued to have an eye on Tennessee and visited Knoxville in March and in June, the latter of which he spent time together with fellow 2026 recruit and Elite 11 quarterback Faizon Brandon.
Now, provided Heupel can close the deal in December and keep everyone in the class, the Vols’ offense in 2026 and beyond looks flat-out scary, with two of the best players in the country set to help Tennessee’s offense take off in 2026 and beyond.
Keys also has the look of one of an NFL-type receiver with his speed, agility, route running, and ball skills. So perhaps, finally, the talk about Tennessee’s offense not translating to the pros is one that can start to die down once his time in Knoxville is over and he is onto the NFL.
NFL success is largely about the player, and Keys is of that ilk that could be playing on Sundays – and playing well – after wrapping up his career in Knoxville.
