Tennessee Vols true freshman offensive tackle David Sanders Jr made his college debut late last month in UT’s 41-34 overtime win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
Sanders, a former five-star recruit, missed the first four games of the season after suffering an injury a couple of days before the Volunteers’ season-opener against Syracuse.
The North Carolina native entered the game against Mississippi State on Tennessee’s next-to-last drive in regulation.
“I thought he went in and handled himself extremely well for his first action of the season — going in with seven minutes and some change left in the ball game on a drive where you’ve got to go score to tie to up,” said Vols head coach Josh Heupel last week of Sanders’ debut against Mississippi State.
Josh Heupel responds to question about David Sanders’ status for the Arkansas game
Heupel met with reporters on Monday to preview the Arkansas game and he was asked about Sanders’ status.
“David’s cleared to play, he’ll be a part of what [we do],” said Heupel.
A reporter then asked if Sanders will be in the starting lineup for Tennessee on Saturday.
“Man, not ready to say anything on that,” responded Heupel. “David’s gonna play. We’re going to need all of those guys.”
Sanders is one of the most talented players on Tennessee’s roster. If he’s healthy and cleared to play, I think we’ll see him start against Arkansas (especially now that he’s had his first college action).
If Sanders starts at right tackle on Saturday, Jesse Perry will move back to guard, and Shad Umarov will return to a backup role.

Beamer, who earned his master’s degree from Tennessee, was a graduate assistant on Rocky Top under Phillip Fulmer from 2001 to 2003. Those three seasons with the Vols, however, didn’t earn Beamer much […]
