So much for the narrative that Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel can't recruit.
Over the last couple of weeks, Tennessee's 2022 recruiting class has risen almost 20 spots in the rankings, from No. 38 in the nation to No. 20 in the nation.
And it looks like the Vols' ascension up the rankings isn't finished yet.
Tennessee appears to be on the verge of landing a key four-star recruit.
2022 wide receiver CJ Smith visited UT this past weekend. On Tuesday, he decommitted from the Florida Gators.
Smith, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Orlando, FL, is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 32 wide receiver in the nation and the No. 27 player in Florida.
The talented wide receiver had been committed to Florida since June.
Smith told GoVols247 after this visit that he's a big fan of Tennessee's offensive scheme under Heupel.
"The scheme that they have is great for players like me, vertical threats," said Smith.
A late visit to Tennessee combined with Smith's desire to sign during the early signing period seems to point to the Volunteers winning this recruiting battle.
If Heupel can land a commitment from Smith, who is also a state champion track athlete, it should give Tennessee a legitimate shot at finishing with a top 15 recruiting class.
And if that ends up being the case, I think it will silence any doubts that detractors have when it comes to Heupel and his ability to recruit — especially considering all the obstacles Heupel's had to deal with during his first season on Rocky Top.
