The Tennessee Vols are in the mix for 2025 three-star linebacker Austin Howard, who recently decommitted from Mississippi State.

Howard, 6-foot-1/226 lbs from Barlett, TN, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 69 linebacker in the nation and the No. 23 player in the state of Tennessee.

The three-star linebacker committed to Mississippi State in late June, but he decommitted from the Bulldogs after visiting Tennessee for the Vols' win against Alabama this past weekend.

247Sports' Tom Loy noted this week that Tennessee and Vanderbilt are the clear favorites to land Howard.

But while Tennessee might seem like the easy choice for Howard, Loy thinks it could be Vanderbilt that lands Howard — mostly because the Commodores are being a little more aggressive in their pursuit.

"I think Vanderbilt is pushing harder than Tennessee right now," wrote Loy. "I see Clark Lea and his staff eventually landing him. That said, I believe the next few weeks gives the Volunteer staff an opportunity to figure out how they want to play it and whether or not they are going to go all-in."

Tennessee doesn't have many spots left in their 2025 recruiting class (the Vols have 23 commits), so they're getting to a point where they have to be "choosy" in who they take. We'll see in the coming weeks how interested the Vols are in Howard and whether or not they can land him over the Commodores.
