A lot of folks seem to think the San Francisco 49ers sent a message to former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings this week, but general manager John Lynch says that wasn’t the case.
Jennings, who wants a new contract with the 49ers, hasn’t practiced lately due to a calf injury.
With Jennings sidelined, the 49ers acquired wide receiver Skyy Moore from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth round-draft pick (the 49ers also received a seventh-round pick in the deal).
Lynch joined KNBR on Thursday and made it clear that trading for Moore wasn’t a message to Jennings.
“No messages,” said Lynch. “We like the player, Skyy. I just talked about that. We love Jauan. We’re getting close to this season [starting] — players gotta practice. But if they’re not healthy enough to do it, they can’t. It’s kind of where we’re at with Jauan right now. But Jauan, we’re getting there, where we’ve got to get out there on that field. And we’ll continue to let that thing unfold.”
“Like I said, Jauan’s a big part of this team,” added Lynch. “And we’re looking forward to the time when he’s back out there again, and hopefully, that’s soon.”
Jennings’ contract wishes makes this a tricky a situation for the 49ers. The former Vol, however, is dealing with a calf injury, which can be tricky. The last thing Jennings needs going into the final season of his contract (assuming a new deal isn’t worked out soon) is to suffer a longterm injury, which would cause his value to plummet.
I can’t see Jennings sitting out any games because of his contract. I’m sure he’s eager to get back on the field and compete as soon as possible.
