Tennessee Vols quarterback Hendon Hooker will look a bit different when he's throwing the ball this upcoming season, though I'm not sure even the keenest football eye will notice at first glance.

Vols head coach Josh Heupel told The Athletic's Joe Rexrode this week that Tennessee altered Hooker's throwing motion this offseason.

Heupel told Rexrode that they tweaked Hooker's throwing motion "to be more consistent and accurate with the football, tightened it up in terms of where the ball is starting".

Hooker was fantastic last year, only throwing three interceptions on 303 pass attempts.

Tennessee is in a much better position now than they were a couple of years ago when it comes to quarterback adjustments.

Under the previous regime, which featured former Heisman Trophy winner Chris Weinke as a quarterbacks coach for two years (Weinke ironically beat out Josh Heupel for the Heisman Trophy in 2000), the Vols seemingly never made proper quarterback adjustments.

For example, the same issues that plagued quarterback Jarrett Guarantano as a redshirt freshman in 2017, still plagued him in 2020 (a lack of accuracy, specifically, was Guarantano's biggest issue).

The Vols are fortunate to now have two quarterback gurus in the building. Heupel gets all the credit, thanks to his background as a national championship-winning quarterback and his offensive success as a coach, but UT quarterbacks coach Joey Halzle is just as important to Tennessee's success.

Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh told Rexrode that Halzle is "as good a quarterbacks mechanics teacher as I’ve been around".

That statement should excite Tennessee fans. It's been a long time since the Vols had one quarterback guru, let alone two.

Not only should this lead to future success for Tennessee's quarterbacks, but it should also entice more high-profile quarterback recruits to check out UT in the coming years.

Everything seems to be coming up aces these days for the Vols. Tennessee finally has the right coaches in place to take this program to where it wants to go — which is all the way to the College Football Playoff.
