The Tennessee Vols are among the top schools for a key player in the NCAA transfer portal.
Texas State defensive lineman Davon Sears announced his top three on Sunday and he included Tennessee, along with Oklahoma and Penn State.
Here's the scouting report on Sears from 247Sports:
He is quick off the snap, shows the lateral agility and twitch to make blockers miss on their punch. He also splits blocks and penetrates well. He shows ability to pursue and chase down plays. Sears must keep getting stronger so that when he doesn't win with quicks, he is able to hold his ground against an offensive lineman or add to his bull rush. It is hard to tell on his film if he is a true 6-foot-3, 280 pounds, but if that size is accurate, he should have the ability to add more pounds.
The Vols could use another defensive lineman with Byron Young heading to the NFL and Tyler Baron unsure about returning to Tennessee in 2023 (I think he returns, but nothing is official yet).
Sears is from Michigan and the Vols have a couple of key Michigan connections on their coaching staff.
Tennessee defensive coordinator Tim Banks is from Detroit and coached at Central Michigan for three seasons (Banks also coached at Penn State, one of Sears' top schools, for five seasons).
Additionally, linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary coached at Michigan in 2020.
We'll see where this goes for the Vols. Tennessee isn't taking just anyone out of the portal — they're being "choosy" with who they take.
Still, this is a name worth watching for Vols fans.
